Every control on this page changes what shoppers see. There are no decorative settings: on/off per model, the Variety control, the "never recommend" tags, and four model settings.
Where the controls are
- Open the PersonalizerAI dashboard.
- Go to Recommendations.
- Open the Models tab.
The tab shows the Excluded tags card and the Engagement reranking card, then one card per model. Engagement reranking re-orders recommendations by what shoppers click and buy on your store. It is off until you turn it on. Below the Pro plan the switch is unavailable and the card says Available on Pro and up. Each card has an on/off switch, a status line, and its 30-day revenue (a dash when there is none). Expand a card to see its performance numbers and its settings. Every change saves on its own — the "Saving…" note shows until it has saved, and a change you make just before you collapse the card or switch tab is still saved.
The status line says what your storefront is doing with the model:
- On — showing in N spots — shoppers saw it in the last 30 days. The spots are listed by name, for example "Product page — below add to cart".
- On — not placed on your theme yet — no shopper has seen it in the last 30 days. To show it, add a Recommendations block in the Shopify theme editor and choose the model in the block's Recommendation model setting. A placed model on a store with no traffic yet reads the same way.
- Off — you turned the model off.

The Models tab: excluded tags on top, then one card per model with its switch and status.
The tab lists the 11 models with an on/off switch. Five models are not on this list. Recently Viewed, Back in Stock, and Complete the Look are always on — you control them by selecting them, or not, on each widget. Complete the Look follows the complement map on the Complements tab (and, on cart surfaces, the Cart upsells tab). See Models: product relationships. Hand-Picked has its own Manual Curations tab, and Custom Blend has its own Custom Blends tab. See Hand-picked & custom models.
Turn a model on or off
- On the Models tab, find the model's card.
- Click the switch on the left of the model name.
- If shoppers saw the model in the last 30 days, the app names those spots and asks you to confirm. Click Turn off.
An off model reads Off. Turn it on again the same way — the app deletes nothing.
To see which models a placement falls back to, open the Fallback Chains tab. You can also change the chain there (Growth plan and up). See How recommendations work.
The Variety control
Some models can return near-duplicates: eight black T-shirts in a row. The Variety slider moves look-alike products further down the list, so the first slots show more different products. The app judges "look-alike" the same way Similar Products does. Slide left for more variety, right for more relevance. The right edge turns Variety off.
Variety changes the order, not the products. The model first picks as many products as the widget shows, and Variety then reorders those same products. It does not swap in other products, and it does not cap how many come from one collection, vendor, or product type.
- Smart Mix is the exception. It picks up to 12 products, more than a widget usually shows. In a smaller widget, the products Variety moves to the end are left out.
- Engagement reranking, when it is on, sets the final order after Variety. The Variety order is then replaced.
- A Frequently Bought Together bundle keeps its own order: your pinned products first. Variety does not apply to it.
The models with a Variety slider are:
- Frequently Bought Together
- Smart Mix
- Complete Your Cart
The "never recommend" tags
Products that carry an excluded tag never appear in a recommendation. The rule covers:
- Every widget.
- Every model.
- Email feeds.
- Your hand-picked curations.
New stores start with two tags: hidden and do-not-recommend.
To keep a product out of recommendations:
- In your Shopify admin, open the product.
- Add the tag do-not-recommend.
- Save the product.
To change the tag list:
- On the Models tab, find the Excluded tags card.
- Type a tag and press Enter to add it.
- Click the small × on a tag to remove it.

The four model settings
Four settings tune one model each. New Arrivals has none: it always shows your newest published products, newest first. Expand the model's card on the Models tab to change them.
Model | Setting | Values | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
On Sale | Sort by | Popularity (default) or Recency | Show the most popular discounted products first, or the newest. |
Similar Products | Maximum results per product | 4–20; the field shows 8 until you change it | The most similar products a widget shows for one product. It can only lower the count: a widget set to show fewer products shows its own number, and a higher value never adds products. No maximum applies until you change the value. |
Smart Mix | Discovery dial | 0–100%; new stores start at 15% | The share of the widget's products that are discovery picks from your trending products and best sellers. The rest relate to the product on the page (in a cart widget, the items in the cart). Off a product page, every pick is a trending product or best seller. |
Complete Your Cart | Max cart items used as anchors | 1–20, default 8 | How many cart items the model reads. In very large carts, only the first N items count. |
The Discovery dial also has its own page: the Explore vs Exploit tab shows a visual preview of the familiar-versus-discovery split. Both places change the same setting.
Why is a model not showing?
When a model you expect does not appear on the storefront, check these causes in order:
- Not enough data — the store is below the model's minimums. The table below has the numbers.
- Still training — the first computation has not finished. In the Shopify admin app, open Home and click Details on the health line. The Store health list shows a Training badge for the model.
- Turned off — the model reads Off.
- No widget uses it — check the model setting on each widget. See How recommendations work.
- Plan — Custom Blend needs the Pro plan or higher.
In the "not enough data", "training", and "turned off" cases, shoppers still see products: the fallback chain serves a simpler model. The same Store health list states the exact shortfall, for example Needs 100 orders/30d, you have 20. To test a model directly, open the Preview tab on the Recommendations screen. Select the Model, optionally a Context product, and click Show preview.
Minimum data per model
"Orders" means orders in the last 30 days. "Daily visitors" is a 7-day average. A dash means no minimum.
